I recently experienced the joy of moving house and was excited to find my new Master Bedroom had a remote control fan and light switch for my Heller ceiling fan, this sounded like a great thing to have. I could have the remote on my bedside table, adjust the fan, turn the lights on and off, all without ever having to leave my bed. Happy days!
However, after a few days of me and my wife walking into the room, switching the old light switch at the door that no longer did anything, fumbling around in the dark trying to find my remote, I couldn't take it anymore! I needed my remote control on the wall, right by the door where you would expect to find it. I could have just stuck it over the old light switch, but I wasn't ready to give up the luxury of also having my remote by the bed, so I decided to 3D print my own holder that would replace the standard light switch.
Speaking with our in house 3D printing expert and Managing Director, Michael Lachs, he assured me this would be simple and agreed to take up the challenge. I could not believe how easy this was! After taking a few measurements and jumping into using Autodesk Inventor, Michael produced the below model in less than 15 minutes. With a few tweaks of the model it was ready for printing.
Our Ultimaker 2 3D printer was ready to go, equipped with a reel of white ABS filament, our custom designed cover and door to ensure quality results when printing in ABS. The STL file was sent to the printer and left to run overnight. When I returned the next day, I had my completed remote control cradle and couldn't wait to get home and try it out. As you can see below, it fit perfectly, with no sanding, filling, tweaking or re-printing required, it fit perfectly first time.
I am now loving walking into my room at night, knowing exactly where the remote is and enjoying light while also being able to control my ceiling fan from the bed at night. Anyone that has a remote control ceiling fan and light combination needs one of these! With Autodesk's new subscription model, industry leading software like Autodesk Fusion 360 is very affordable and easy to use. Anyone can model and print their own parts now. Of course you're not restricted to fan and light remote control cradles, without the manufacturing, time and financial constraints of traditional manufacturing, the biggest limitation is your creativity.
If you would like your own remote control cradle, it's very easy to model your own, or you can download the STL file from Thingiverse
