While there is a great deal of focus on the uses of 3D modelling during construction stages of new assets, the true value of Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementation is that it keeps delivering results long after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Facility and Space Management are key considerations for universities around the world - particularly ones in densely populated areas - can be effectively handled through sophisticated software solutions like AutoCAD and Archibus.
The space issue on campus
With one of the highest population densities in the world, Singapore requires careful management of available space. This is especially true for its higher education institutes. From halls to academic and recreational facilities, colleges and universities have a large physical plant. Singapore Polytechnic is no exception to these requirements.
"Space is a valuable asset of the university, so they really care about and fully utilise it. They are really keen on space solutions," said Zhao Lu.
In the past, Singapore Polytechnic's space data and CAD drawings were kept in separate files - often leading to twice the amount of work when updating facilities information. This also increased the risk of human error, which reduced productivity and required more resources for data upkeep.
Turning to software-based solutions
Clearly, a better system was needed. Singapore Polytechnic consulted with Redstack, which led to an implementation of AutoCAD for space management. Under this system, changes made in the drawing were automatically reflected in the space information database.
"They had to maintain different formats, update information in different formats and repeat the same effort - all in different formats," Ms. Zhao said.
"We put the parcel together in one whole system to help them as a centralised database. This helped them speed up the creation of working drawings and reduced the time and effort to populate the architectural drawings with their facility information."
This became a key pilot project for Redstack, as it showed how integrated software could be beneficial in the post-construction stages, as well as how it could optimise the return on investment for an organisation.
Newer developments in the field
While this project certainly delivered impressive results for Singapore Polytechnic, even more sophisticated solutions are now being implemented in assets around the Asia-Pacific region. Chief among the newer systems is building information modelling (BIM).
At the time the space management system was implemented at Singapore Polytechnic, BIM was not widely used. However, the AutoCAD and Archibus method laid the groundwork for more current BIM and facilities management integrations.
