Successful businesses allow clients to do great things with their products. This is exemplified by Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW), which has been using Redstack products and services in its daily operations since October 2013.
GMW is Victoria’s largest rural water authority, and is tasked with storing, managing and delivering water across the north of the state. The area serviced by the company totals 68,000 square kilometres, and stretches from the Great Dividing Range in the south to the River Murray in the North. Performing effectively across such a vast landscape requires dependable products and excellent services.
The reasons for choosing Redstack are simple, according to Chee Chiang Woo, senior management engineer at GMW.
"I think Redstack has an excellent range of CAD products and supporting services. Their staff are friendly and very approachable and often offer practical solution to help resolves our concerns," he says.
These CAD products are vital for GMW's day-to-day operations, allowing it to design and produce the devices it needs quickly and efficiently. The firm mainly relies on Autodesk Inventor and the range of products within the Autodesk Product Design Suite. GMW also utilises Autodesk’s simulation software for finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
Without these products and the accompanying services, GMW would be unable to perform its key responsibilities to such a high standard. Current projects undertaken by the company include:
● Managing delivery to water and irrigation districts
● Maintaining the infrastructure for these locations
● Implementing government policies for ground and surface water management
● Delivering the Connections Project – a $2 billion project to modernise the area's irrigation delivery network
The key advantage of these products is the ability to simulate real-world situations, including the forces and locations that GMW's tools and mechanisms will need to withstand. This saves on expensive prototyping, as new projects can be worked through in a virtual space before physical development begins.
GMW has found a number of uses for these services in the planning an analysis sector of its business, allowing it to assess potential risks and further refine products. Mechanism review processes allow for fitting spaces, tolerances and welding spaces to be checked after a part has been in use to make sure it is operating as intended.
Fluid flow analysis is also performed with the help of CFD software from Redstack, which enables GMW to plan the most efficient operating practices for pipes, channels and drain outlets.
GMW has managed to achieve great savings with the use of Redstack products and services, with the new ability to design items such as valve actuator extensions in-house, allowing for reduced production costs.
"Within the first year of the introduction of the software, we have achieved a significant amount in terms of saving with the software and training more than paying for themselves," said Mr Woo.
Importantly for GMW, Redstack delivers much more than just software, providing the expertise, training and support GMW needs to make the most of its technology investment. “There are many potential opportunities to engage Redstack in the future. These include operation optimisation, improved work process flows, documentation controls, data management, automated electrical design, consultancy and more," Mr Woo reflected.
