Selecting the right BIM training course

Success in a BIM project requires a wide variety of skills. How can you choose the right training course based on your role in a project?

Building information modelling (BIM) is a popular methodology in many nations throughout the Asia Pacific region, and it's beginning to take off in Australia. Whether you're a beginner or your skillset goes well beyond the basics, now is a great time to further develop with BIM training.

Selecting the right course is important, and it's not as easy as it sounds. Let's take a closer look at the different options you have and how to choose the right BIM training course.

Knowing your BIM role
Because BIM is a discipline that encompasses the full scope of a construction project - from design all the way through to facilities management throughout an asset's lifecycle - a wide range of skillsets are required.

After all, BIM is much more than just a particular type of 3D model; it encompasses the whole collaborative process of bringing stakeholders together, ensuring teams have the skills and tools they need, and driving the project forward.

Many people sign up for a BIM training course that doesn't fit their role in a project, so it's important to make sure you select one that meets your needs.

Instructor Credentials and Experience
If you're looking for BIM Management training, make sure your instructor has experience in implementing BIM on real life projects.  If your instructor only has architectural or 3d modeling experience, with no experience managing real life BIM projects, this may not be the best option.  Redstack only use highly qualified instructors with real life, international experience delivering BIM successfully on design and construction projects.

Endorsements and Subsidies
Redstack recommend seeking a training course that is endorsed by a third party.  You may also find that subsidies are available for your preferred training course.  The Redstack BIM Training Course is endorsed by the Construction Industry Training Board, and CITB members are eligible to receive a significant subsidy on this course.

Course Curriculm and Take Away Material
It is going to be difficult to take in and recall everything covered in your training, and you don't want to have to take all your own notes.  A quality training course will come with detailed course curriculm, a clear structure and a manual you can take away and refer back to when required.

3D Modelling or BIM Management?
Learning about modelling within design or architectural software is an essential course of study for anyone on a project who will be involved in the creation or modification of a BIM model. However, if these are skills you need to develop, it is a better idea to look into training courses geared towards specific software like Autodesk Revit or Navisworks. As such, software based courses are not the ideal choice for someone who will take on a managerial role in a BIM project.

True BIM management training is not focused on software, but on the skills and concepts needed to provide leadership to teams engaged in a BIM project. These include the principles of BIM and essential processes throughout the project timeline. Armed with this training, managers can lead their teams through projects that take full advantage of the BIM methodology.
