What impact will Autodesk's licensing changes have?

In a significant update for users of Autodesk, the software company has announced a major change that will affect how customers procure and use its suite of products.

The engineering and architecture software vendor revealed that from February 1, 2016, those looking to purchase new commercial seats for Autodesk's standalone desktop software products will only be able to do so via the Desktop Subscription service. This covers the vast majority of Autodesk's desktop software range.

Autodesk's Senior Vice President of Industry Strategy & Marketing, Andrew Anagnost, explained that these changes are necessary due to the changing nature of software procurement, which is gravitating towards a subscription model.

"How the world is designed and made is changing, and how software is delivered is changing as well. The companies that embrace these changes will lead their industries toward a more nimble, connected and richer future," he noted.

In addition, Mr Anagnost said that the change will deliver numerous benefits to customers, such as simplified product management and deployment, lower upfront costs and a more efficient payment structure.

"Our customers have long asked for greater flexibility and more value from their software investments. The shift to subscription allows Autodesk to deliver both, as well as an improved user experience and easier access to a broader portfolio of technology," he added.

According to Mr Anagnost, the company has made the announcement especially early in order to give customers time to prepare for the changes, and will work closely to make the "transition as smooth as possible".

What are the next steps?
A key point to note is that the change only affects customers looking to make new investments in Autodesk software from February of next year. Consequently, those who already hold perpetual licenses will be able to continue using these.

Additionally, customers on a maintenance subscription will keep receiving the relevant benefits for as long as their subscription is active.
